Weymouth School Committee submits $94.9 million FY27 budget over mayor's objection

WEYMOUTH — March 26, 2026 — Weymouth School Committee advances $94.9 million FY27 budget 5-1, with Mayor Michael Melis the sole dissenter. The committee voted Thursday to submit its level-service operating budget of $94,877,714 to the mayor's office, with Melis arguing in person that the amount exceeds what current town revenue can support and that approving it would "decimate" police, fire, and other municipal departments. Member Kelly delivered an extensive statement enumerating conditions in district buildings, including three sub-separate classrooms running without licensed special education teachers and a school left without a crossing guard despite documented safety concerns, saying "level service is not progress — it is survival." Chair Nardone voted yes while acknowledging the budget "is truly not what our school system needs." Superintendent Melanie Curtin is scheduled to present the budget before the Town Council on May 12.
