Weymouth Moves Fireworks to July 5, Bans Outdoor Watering Amid Drought

The town has pushed its annual fireworks show to July 5 and banned all nonessential outdoor water use, two announcements that will directly affect nearly every resident heading into the Independence Day holiday week.

TOWN HALL

A Level 2 Significant Drought designation is now in effect for Weymouth, and town officials say the designation requires an immediate ban on all nonessential outdoor water use for both residents and businesses. The restrictions follow guidance from the state's Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs and took effect immediately upon the announcement.

Separately, the town confirmed that its annual Fireworks Spectacular will not take place on July 4 this year. Officials cited circumstances beyond the town's control — including the 250th anniversary of the nation and the scale of Boston's celebration — as the reason for moving the display to Saturday, July 5.

Also on the town's radar: the Department of Municipal Licenses and Inspections (Building) has posted a notice about delays in processing public records requests. No timeline for resolution was given.

SCHOOLS

Weymouth Public Schools posted a reminder this week that district offices will operate on summer hours through the break. Families needing to reach the district are encouraged to check the district's website for current contact information and hours. The district also has summer reading lists posted for all grade levels, PreK through grade 12, with grade-level assignments and suggested titles available online at weymouthschools.org.

Looking ahead on the district calendar: the first day for staff is September 1, with students in grades 1–6 and grade 9 returning September 3 (early release), and kindergartners, grades 7–8, and grades 10–12 starting September 4.
