Weymouth Council Refers $1.2 Million in Fire Spending, School Safety Issue to Committees

WEYMOUTH — June 1, 2026 — Weymouth Town Council unanimously referred more than $1.2 million in fire department spending requests to committee and opened a formal process to address dangerous traffic conditions at Ralph Talbot School. The council voted 11-0 on all measures at its June 1 meeting, accepting a fiscal year 2025 financial audit from CBIZ that found the town's books in clean condition, with an unassigned general fund balance of approximately $17 million — about $3 million above the prior year. Auditors Scott McIntyre and Zach Nolan credited weekly calls with town administration for cutting six months off the reporting timeline. Council President Arthur Mathews said he was relieved: "When we were here last December I was not a happy camper." Four fire-related measures — including a $485,000 free cash transfer for overtime and a $175,000 reserve fund draw for sick-leave buyback costs — head to the Budget/Management Committee, as does a proposed five-year contract with Xavus Solutions for senior transportation software and an $84,000 request to design a pedestrian bridge at Great Esker Park. The Ralph Talbot School traffic safety matter was referred to the Ordinance Committee for a June 9 public meeting, with Councillor Gary MacDougall reporting he personally witnessed near-misses involving a crossing guard during a 45-minute visit to the site Monday morning.
